EXPERIMENTAL SOFTWARE
October 3, 2008
What is Rev X? The Zero Off team has been listening to the voice of the waterski community and is committed to make every effort to provide the best pull for all types of skiers. Rev X addresses many of the concerns voiced by the waterski community and includes new screens, easier to use interfaces and more importantly several different letter and number options designed to optimize the pull for a broader range of skiers.Rev X is experimental software used for development purposes only. PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS NOT A REQUIRED UPDATE AND IS NOT TOURNAMENT APPROVED. How do I get Rev X?Rev X is available for download by request only. Users will be required to complete an application and a download link will be emailed within 72 hours of recipt of application. The download link will have a 10 day expiration date. Please note: Rev X is not for public distribution and links/downloads should not be shared. Each applicant will be required to log information on the use of the software by email or online.  What are the requirements to become an applicant and download Rev X?1. Each applicant must posses a PC laptop with the current AquaStar display software and an eCom cable. (for more information about required hardware please see below)2. Applicants must have the ability to properly update their own software. Zero Off will not replace or exchange Zero Off GPS speed control units that have Rev X software updates.3. Each applicant will be required to log usage information, user functionality and preferences of all skiers are pulled by Rev X on the Rev X review form. Each review form must be submitted for review by the Zero Off development team. 4. Applicants must agree not to use Rev X in any tournament without formal written approval from AWSA.5. Applicants must agree not to share or distribute Rev X software. Please note: All downloads are traceable and serialized for security. How do I install Rev X?1.       Download and follow the Reprogramming Instruction ManualWhat is required to do this software update?1.       PC laptop with Microsoft XP or Vista2.       eCom cable - Order an eCom cable3.       Download and Install the AquaStar display Software4.       Download Rev X softwareWhat are the Slalom "Pull Type" settings? There are a total of nine slalom ‘Pull Type' settings. They are: A1, A2, A3, B1, B2, B3, C1, C2, and C3. Following is a brief review of how the system works and the information you need to select a setting.Once the boat is stabilized at target speed, the primary factor causing it to deviate is skier loading and unloading. In response to a negative speed deviation (skier load), the engine increases rpm. Conversely, in response to a positive speed deviation (skier release), the engine decreases rpm. This rpm change varies in both rate and amount. The settings of A, B, or C primarily determine the rate at which engine rpm is modified in response to speed deviations, while the settings of 1, 2, or 3 spread the load resulting from those rpm changes. At the same time, the system works to achieve its goal of maintaining the average speed down the course as close as possible to the target speed. The best and most consistent results can be obtained by matching your skiing style with the system's programmed response to speed changes as shown below. A recommended strategy is to first select a letter, then a number. The types of pulls can be summarized as follows:A - Slower engine response out of the buoy, but the boat will tend to move ahead as the skier approaches the buoy.B - Moderate engine response compared to A and C.C - Faster engine response out of the buoy, but the boat will tend to hold back as the skier approaches the buoy.1 - Requires the lowest amount of load before the system initiates an rpm spread. This provides for a softer pull behind the boat.2 - Provides for a moderate pull behind the boat as compared to 1 and 3.3 - Requires the highest amount of load before the system initiates an rpm spread.(Note: If you are new Zero Off user or not sure, a recommended starting setting is B2.)(Note: If you are transitioning from a previous tournament approved version of Zero Off, use your letter + the number 3. For example, if you have been skiing with letter A, then use A3 in order to receive the most similar pull to the 2008 version. The same rule applies to B and C.Examples of when a lower letter and/or number might be appropriate:Skiers primarily concerned with getting the softest possible pull behind the boat. Those who are light or lightly load the line.Skiers who tend to break, overturn or have less than optimum body position out of the buoy.Deep shortline skiing as a lower setting helps counteract the natural robust acceleration of the pendulum swing.Examples of when a higher letter and/or number might be appropriate:Skiers primarily concerned with being released from the boat coming into the buoy. Those who are heavy or heavily load the line.Skiers who tend to be in good skiing position out of the buoy.Other considerations include strength, conditioning, proficiency, attempting a new line length, etc. Experiment with various settings to find out which works best for you.Downloads for Rev X Introduction, Application, FAQ's & Review FormIntroduction Letter FAQ's About Rev X Application to Download Rev X Review FormReprogramming InstructionsAquaStar Display SoftwareA special thanks goes to Andy Mapple, Freddy Kreuger, Joe Grogan, Greg Badal, Andy Rose and everyone who contributed to the Zero Off Rev X test in California.   ... LEARNING YOUR ABC's
June 19, 2008
There has been alot of talk, email, posts and phone calls about A, B & C. We are currently working on a visual guide and ask that you send in you thought and comments about the pull types and more importantly techniques that you feel work best for each letter. The system has an underlying control loop which ensures the average speed over the slalom course is kept to a close tolerance.Overlaid on this are additional gains intended to influence the "feel" of the system. These are "Decel" and "Accel" gains. The decel gain acts to eliminate any deceleration, and will tend to add fuel any time the boat is decelerating proportional to how large the gain is and how big the deceleration is. Similarly, the accel gain acts to eliminate accelerations, and will tend to reduce fuel when the boat is accelerating proportional to gain and acceleration magnitude. So, a bigger decel gain will tend to be more aggressive in adding fuel when the skier loads the boat and causing it to decelerate, and a bigger accel gain will be more aggressive in reducing fuel when the skier unloads the boat. The decel gain is active any time the boat is decelerating, regardless of whether the actual speed is above or below target, and the accel gain is active only when accelerating, also regardless of actual speed. Therefore an assymmetric feel is possible by manipulating these gains, although there are more subtle interactions with the underlying average speed control loop which can make the interactions more complex.A/B/C allows three combinations of the decel/accel gains as listed above to be selected "on-the-fly"There may have been some flip/flopping of the A/C aggressiveness terminology as we went through the development last fall and spring, but we tried to keep the directional relationships between A/B/C similar when we settled on the RevP settings, just with considerably less agressive responses. It's difficult to nail down a universal description because different skiers with different rhythms at differing rope lengths perceive things in very different ways, but here's a description of how the gains work I put together for someone some time ago:Andy Mapple came up with shorter summary of this from the skier's perspective:A= Softer pull out of the buoy, but maintains a tighter line into the buoyB= Equal application of speed and deceleration as needed. Responds same to applying power, as bringing it off.C= Quicker reaction out of turn, allowing for less pull into next buoy.  ... More >>
TOURNAMENT TEAM REQUIRED HARDWARE
June 18, 2008
Please note that Zero Off driven tournaments may require additional Zero Off hardware including a judge's display kit, rope switch adaptor and eCom cable. Judge's displays are used for tournament required second displays. Please note that your judge's display must be flashed with the corrected Zero Off software to match the software on the Zero Off speed control system.
